Snow Day, II

And now school's been cancelled for tomorrow. This is absurd. We live in Wisconsin, for pity's sake; it's supposed to be cold.

I'm trying to envision Pa Ingalls of Little House on the Prairie fame telling Ma he wasn't going to get to the chores most days in the winter because the cold was too dangerous. Please.

I knew you'd be one of the whiners. We had fun. We built forts.

From the NY Times:

Hundreds of schools in at least three states were closed because officials feared for the safety of children venturing outdoors to walk to class or to bus stops. One of the largest districts to close was Milwaukee’s, where for the second day in a row Tuesday more than 90,000 students and about 8,000 administrators were out of class. The temperature there was 11 degrees below zero Tuesday morning, with a wind chill that made it seem like minus 30.

School officials in Milwaukee said they were concerned about buses being unable to start or stalling on their way to pick up children, who would be left to stand in the cold for what could be dangerous or life-threatening periods.

They said they were also aware that many children in Milwaukee are from impoverished families with no alternate means of transportation. In addition, some children had been showing up to school underdressed, without socks or gloves or hats.

That reality “is not comfortable for us,” said Roseann St. Aubin, a spokeswoman for the Milwaukee schools. “We had to look at the worst-case scenario.”
