Trader Joe's

I might have been the last person in America who had never graced the inside of a Trader Joe's.

Until today.

Our brand spanking new Trader Joe's opened last Thursday and today, sans children (thanks, Dad!) I braved the crowds. Oh what fun!

Although it was busy and crowded I still enjoyed getting the lay of the land and managed to walk out without doing too much damage to my bottom line still buy some interesting things.

Superdad will be in heaven tonight since I bought his favorite snack in the world: corn chips and salsa.

Areas of the store still relatively unexplored at this point yet on my future "must see" list are: the cheese section (their selection looks great!), their alcohol section (no tequila, Quantum Void) and their cleaning aisle.

Any Trader Joe's experts out there with advice and favorite products encouraged to respond!

What is it? Is it a food warehouse like Sams or Woodmans? Just curious!!

I'll chime right in with some of our favorite TJ things: ginger crunch granola and pecan praline granola, anything from the nuts and dried fruit aisle, pumpkin muffin mix, greek yoghurt...I could go on! Have fun there!

All the things Beecher said. Plus almost anything in the freezer aisle - bags of tiny Maine blueberries, haricots verts, mango chunks... Lots of their TJ brand stapes are good buys - olive oil, etc. Triple ginger cookies! Tortellini!

Oh, one of the most diabolically good things there are the dutch waffle cookies (stroopwafeln)--very thin, tiny, crispy waffles sandwiched with chewy caramel. Have one or two with a cup of coffee, if you can restrain yourself... At the stores around here they are usually in a small bag above the freezer bins.

Yes, superdad, the prices are a big part of the appeal. Check out the wines: skip the "2 buck Chuck", but I'm fond of the "La Boca" Malbec and the Vinho Verde. Plenty of other good deals. Not everything is organic or healthful - transfats and HFCS may be lurking, so you need to read labels. Also the service. All those guys in Hawaiian shirts are there to HELP you - they will run and find things for you, happily unload your cart, whatever. I think they are beneficiaries of some kind of profit-sharing.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I can't wait to go back and sample all these new things!

Oh my gosh, Beecher, those cookies sound wonderful!

I so wish we had something like that here. We live in a town of 82,000 and we only have 2 grocery store chains to pick from. Stinks big time.

tasted one or two, and then four or five (or was it 11 or 12?) of one of the recommended treats from trader joe's at supermom's table saturday night. sorry can't remember which trader joe delight it was, but it was a frenetic evening around trader joe's supermom's dinner table. supermom, who was delivering the treats while putting one of three children to bed, keeping superdad satisfied, and three guests entertained might remember.
